Wonky

The Olympics have been brilliant, and while recent life events have meant I haven’t spent much time watching, I did catch Bradley Wiggins, Chris Hoy, Mo Farrah, Jessica Ennis and Laura Trott as hey gave their gold winning performances. My family was very concerned for me as I crept closer and closer to the television as Mo Farah ran his 10k. Apparently I was only mildly quieter to an afternoon of me shouting advice on how Scotland should be playing rugby.

Before the Olympics started I took up running, and hopefully in the next few weeks I should manage my own 5k, although there will be no gold medal. Instead I’ve used the beginning to run again to moving to training as an opportunity to remind myself of my own strength and stamina. I’ve said elsewhere it has made little difference to my weight, but I enjoy the 30-40 minutes of putting thoughts in their right places with no disturbance but the rhythm of movement.

In the transition I’ve been making from thinking I had it all sussed to discovering that there was a different plan that time has been important. Sleep hasn’t come easily as my mind replays conversations and events, and even with a confirming event yesterday I’m still finding it difficult to quieten thoughts. Perhaps eventually I will feel able to express the changed plans here, but it’s a walk I’m still making.

However “uneven bars”? It’s bugged me for a fortnight, and I heard it said again this evening on the “One Show”. Uneven makes it sound like someone has been careless in their preparation, and uneven bars sounds like something you see after one too many gins on a night out. (Not that I would know.)

Surely “asymmetric”. It says what it is. Two bars at different heights.

I have no idea why the discipline is now called “uneven bars”, but I have a funny feeling that it is because maths concepts seem to be out of favour. However it just sounds wrong, so at the Commonwealth Game or the next Gymnastics competition I hope someone has the good sense to suggest that “asymmetric” is the stronger concept.

Who should I write to?
